Cambuslang Library is to remain open for a further year as efforts continue to find it a permanent new home.

The library, located in Cambuslang Gate, has been supported by council funding since South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture announced plans to withdraw services in February 2024.

Along with a number of other libraries, it was initially backed by the £150,000 Future Libraries Fund, which was launched by Council Leader Joe Fagan in tandem with a £1 million Community Fightback Fund to keep halls and libraries open while new operating models were explored with local groups.

Cambuslang Library was then guaranteed funding for two years, and Councillor Fagan has now revealed a further year of support while efforts continue to find a new home in a community hub.

The Council Leader said: “We have already taken steps to keep Cambuslang Library open, and I can confirm that temporary funding will continue while a permanent solution is found. This will be a relief to local library users and provide them with certainty and a good degree of comfort.

“The Council will continue to work with the local community to secure a permanent solution for local services buffeted by the twin terrors of rising costs and government under-funding.”
